The best way is the internet. Just google: birds native to (your town name). Then pick a few web birds off the page and google their names and it will show you if it would nest there. There is humming birds native to where i live and me and my mom always fill up feeders for them and we saw them just flying around everywhere! good luck and i hope this helps!

If you live here in the U.S., you can either look online or go to the library or your local Borders or Barnes and Noble and get a book on birds that are in your state, for example, Birds of Illinois. You can also look for regional books, for example, Birds of the Midwest. You can also see if there are any birding events in your area. Sometimes there are lectures at state parks and libraries. If you see any of these events, then you can talk to other people and discover what birds live in your area. Another option is to buy a good set of binoculars own and get a good birding guide (like Sibley’s) and go out and explore on your. Have fun discovering all the wonderful birds in your area!

The library will have bird books that show maps of a range birds for the different seasons. A bird book from Borders or Books a Million should have a bird book for your area.

Find out where the nearest Bird Watchers club is and you will gain lots of info from them, or get out and about and see what birds are in your area.
