Took puppy to emergency vet last night?
My puppy wouldn’t stop throwing up and had bouts of diarrhea all day yesterday. He was diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis- she thinks that he either ate something on a walk that he shouldn’t have or someone throw something into our backyard [we live backing a park]. Anyway, I’m glad that I took him in even if it was expensive. She also told us that many animals end up getting hospitalized with this because they end up being dehydrated, but my pup keeps drinking and peeing, so I have to watch that- but he hasn’t been sick since yesterday before we went.
My question is when I was there, I was went early [our regular vet just closed] and we were there for about 3 hours [other pets kept getting bumped ahead of us].
When we were waiting for the medication and the bill, we got talking to another lady and her dog who was wrapped in a sheet. It turns out that she was there for the dogs ear because it was all pussy. I asked her if the sheet was like a blanket for the dog and she said no- the dog was in a sheet because it just had a litter of pups, and the pups ripped her, but she said there was nothing the vet could do about that. I asked if this was the dogs first litter, and she laughed and said no- saying that she was now going to “retire” that dog from breeding and use one of her pups instead.
From the little information that I got, it made me wonder- would you say that she was a BYB?
~~
Wow- sorry about the spelling and bad grammar, I haven’t had a cup of coffee yet this morning.

I don’t know what BYB is but I don’t like people who use their animals for monetary gain. They are not here for that purpose. People who do that are animal abusers if you ask me. Selfish and awful is what that lady is/was. If the animal was torn then that means she should have had a C section for the puppies. Retiring the animal and using a puppy. What a miserable life the dog will have. I get so angry w/ animals being used for money!
I don’t know. You can’t consider someone as a BYB just from them saying that they breed. You have to know if the dog has it’s championship titles, and other titles or else the breeder is a BYB. The poor dog. She must be the most worn out dog in the world.
Who knows? She might be a show dog breeder or a BYB.
ADD: lkl, a BYB is a Backyard Breeder. Which means that the owner of 2 dogs (male & female) breed the dogs without any titles or permission or breeding mentors.
Considering that newborn pups DON’T HAVE TEETH, this lady in the waiting room lied to you or was so negligent in caring for her dogs that she has no idea what happened to her b*tch. Pups start getting teeth at 3-4 weeks, and even then, could not produce such an injury to their dam (mother).
If the ear was “all pussy” it had been infected for some time. This didn’t happen yesterday.
She could be a BYB, a puppymiller, a hoarder, or just not that bright and very neglectful. All of those characterizations would fit.
RE: Your dog: Dehydration is a real risk with persistent vomiting or diarrhea and certainly with both present. You may want to pick up some Pedialyte. Plain, unflavored Pedialyte (generic is fine). Replace your dog’s water with 50% Pedialyte and 50% water. This will help protect your dog from dehydration and maintain the proper balance of electrolytes. You can add a bit of chicken broth if needed to encourage your pup to drink more. Good luck!
I grew up showing and breeding English Setters. In 40+ years of that, no dam has ever gotten an infected ear, BTW.
