How do I get a German Shepherd and Cocker Spaniel get along?
We have a 10 year old Cocker Spaniel that we have had about five years. We have recently adopted a five-year-old German shepherd. Both are men, and both seem to alpha dogs. The Cocker Spaniel was nuetered, the Geman Shepherd has not. . Help us get it to stop fighting before my Cocker Spaniel was killed. He took two nasty bites. It’s funny, they met nuetral field, and we go together and get them together and they are usually good. The first time they fought over food, this last time it seemed nothing more to fight. Can this be fixed mounted or I have to give up at one of them?
Steak feed em in separate corners of the room while listening to classical music
I think you should not get another male in a house that already has a new man in the house especially since the dog is bigger than the existing dog. but when the struggle for food try feeding in a separate room or kennel training them try to work out that your the alpha dog, the two of them, that they might suspend again in sight, but usually when a male German Shepperd’s, and he is already five years to think that he’s the Alpha Dog chances are it will not be easy to break him of it.
Do you have a professional dog behaviorist and trainer come in a position to evaluate. The main thing is that the alpha, they are not. You tell them how to be. Your Cocker deserves a visit by a trained professional who not only see what your dog, but what you are as well.
Cockers are not the breed-dog freindly, it may be that after five years as top dog, with a new dog is not going to work. The food was the subject of a red flag, a fight over nothing big flag. First, let’s not alone. If you are not there with them, use a crate. Second, the GSD will receive fixed immediately! It can not solve completely the situation, but it helps. Finally, if you really want to keep them both, get a dog trainer, a knowledge of dealing with aggression, has questions. When it comes, giving one up, please do not give up your Cocker of 5 years! It will be hard to get a dog that is ten instead. Good luck, hope that all of you in a position to live in peace and harmony, are soon:)
This can happen when you introduce a new dog in the mix, even though both dogs are fixed, both males, females or both are each one. Even if you think and they are okay, I would make separate them, it can help your fixed shepherds, but really only help the time. I know it only takes a few seconds for a dog, do it big as a sheepdog, to some serious damage to another dog – I ALWAYS watch my shepherd (male and female) around other dogs do not know them well. They are not mine, but it is her garden, her toys, her person, etc, and interact only time and patience and constant monitoring of the dogs they get used to sharing with another dog. It will take some time for both dogs, I raise and breed shepherd and it can last for months, they always end up friends, or at least tolerate each other.
