Are family is planning on getting a dog , and my mother dosen’t want to get a dog from the shelter because she said that a person won’t turn in a good dog, only a bad dog . But i really want one from the shelter ,because i think it’s really sad that there are so many dogs in shelters, and then most of them get put to sleep . So my queston is do you have a dog from the shelter ?

Most of my dogs have been from the shelter and they are wonderful. My dog Bain is amazing. I love him so much. He was already trained too. We adopted him when he was 1 or 2 years old. He seemed like the meanest and most aggressive dog in the pound. Me and my dad got him because we thought we wouldn’t get adopted because of that (It was a kill shelter). He is the sweetest dog in the world around us and people he knows is not a threat.

Animals get turned into the shelters for a lot of reasons. We are taking some cats to the humane society because we don’t have the time, room, or money to take care of them. Some find a pet too much responsibility. Some dogs could be also be lost dogs.

If you take her there, and if she has a heart- she will have to give in. Everytime I go they always make me cry for them.

Shelter dogs are not necessarily bad dogs, as a matter of fact i was at a shelter in South Africa and there was these people who brought there dog there when i was there and he was the sweetest dog but they were moving and not able to take it. Some people put there there for that reason or just cause they don’t want them anymore. Plus you will be able to tell the mean ones from the nice ones. Also there was this rottweiler at this shelter REALLY SWEET DOG! : ) Tell her that the dog you are going to buy does not REALLY need you the shelter dogs NEED you and just think you will be changing one life and one life means a lot! : )

Dogs from shelters are great yes we’ve owned dogs from shelters. The best way to try and convince your Mom about getting a shelter dog would be to see if she would just go have a look around at 1. . . when she see’s all those precious faces she’ll surely see that shelter dogs are not (bad dogs) Good Luck

I volunteer with cats and dogs in shelters. Shelters work very hard with animals to get them socialized and ready for adoption. Many of the dogs turned in are homeless because of the death of the owner or because they had to move somewhere and couldn’t take the pet with them. When you adopt a shelter animal you usually get a health guarantee and spay/neuter certificate so the fees really aren’t that expensive as opposed to getting a free to a good home animal who might be sick and will be fixed at full price. Go to the shelter and spend some time with the dogs so you can find one whose personality fits you and your family (Lori included). Hope you find a great dog!

I have always had shelter dogs and they are Great. Pet stores sell dogs from puppy mills and have many health problems. Why profit them when you can save a dog from death.

  6. Megs Says:

The only thing you can really do is try and me an adult about it and do some reasearch to prove her wrong.

State your case as to why these dogs need homes.

Most shelters go through a lot of therapy with the dogs to assure they are safe. They will not give away a “bad dog” without advanced warning or your willingness to take one.

  7. wolfkris Says:

do your shelters have websites? If so, you could go on there and often under the pictures of the dogs they say why they were given up, many times it has to do with moving or not enough time. Maybe if you showed her this she would realize that people don’t just give up dogs because they are “bad”

  8. berner mom Says:

Yes, I have a Husky that I adopted when she was 12 weeks old, NO health problems, in training classes and will be entered into obedience trials this year. She ROCKS!!

I also had a Lab mix that I adopted at 1 year of age. . . BEST dog. I NEVER had to put her on a leash, stayed right by my side. . . She was with me for 16 yrs. . .

NO bad dogs, only irresponsible owners that don’t get their dogs spayed/neutered. . . . .

  9. Sarah Says:

My oldest dog is from the shelter. She is a 9 year old German Shepherd/Australian Cattle Dog mix. I got her when she was a puppy and she has been the best dog I could ever ask for. She has an incredibly sweet personality and she’s been a great part of my family. I wouldn’t think twice before getting another dog from a shelter.

There are so many animals in shelter who deserve good loving homes. Dogs are not always put into shelters because they are bad or rejected. It really is a sad situation; people become frustrated with their dogs (because they require a lot of time, effort, etc. ), so they take them to a shelter rather than trying to find a trainer, etc. Some dogs are put into shelters simply because their owners are moving and they can’t take their dog with them. Other dogs are strays who deserve a warm, loving home. Tell your mom that your local shelter should be able to place you will a dog with a good temperment, personality, etc.

    Good luck!

  10. say no to BSL Says:

    What you could say:
    1) People only turn in dogs to shelters cuz they’re too lazy to take proper care of them. The dogs are rarely bad–it’s the people who train them the wrong way and don’t take care of them!
    2) Saying all shelter dogs are bad is like saying all foster kids are bad too. After all, parents only abandon BAD kids, not GOOD kids, right?
    3) We will be saving a life this way.

If she still does not yield, suggest using rescue. Try this site:
    http://www. petfinder. com
If a dog’s ad is up chances are its rescue thinks it’s going to be adopted out soon and is therefore a “good dog” in your mother’s eyes.

  11. renee k Says:

u can get puppies from shelters too if shes worried about getting one. check breed rescues also. they arent all bad from shelters some are there cuz owners died, over bred etc. your mom needs to do some home work

  12. gin Says:

I have had rescues and they have all turned out great and its also saving a life

  13. Bonzie12 Says:

I got both of my dogs from shelters and they are the best dogs ever. I believe shelter dogs know that you are saving their lives and try to go out of their way to please you. I wouldn’t get my dogs anywhere else.

  14. Dawg Says:

My dawg is from a shelter, she’s GREAT with kids, she’s smart and has learned well. She was really skittish at first but all she needed was some attention and training. An older dog that has a history of abuse might be a different story.

The shelter will allow you to spend as much time as you need to determine if the dog is right for you. Do some research too into the breed of dog and also into personality traits. Also there are some simple tests you can do with the dog to see if it’s going to try to dominate or not. All dogs – from a shelter or pedigree will have to figure out their place in the heirarchy of your home, it’s quite normal. . . . and it will always be happy to see you.

We got our dog Biscuit from a shelter about 6 months ago. He’s perfect! Not all the dogs in a shelter are bad and get turned in. Some people just cant take care of their dog anymore or the dog gets lost and the pound picks them up. We have gotten several dogs from our local shelter and yes some were bad, but I would rather save a dog from getting put to sleep than buy one from a breeder. Also, when you get a dog from the pound they require you to have them spayed or nuetered and require them to have a rabies shot. Most of the time the cost is included in the adoption fee.

If you decide to get one from the shelter ask the people that work there questions about the dog you are thinking about getting. Sometimes they can tell you why a particular animal is there.
Like our dog Biscuit, his former owner just was not able to take care of him. He actually had all his vet records from his former owner and was current on his shots.
I hope all goes well for you. Congrats on getting a life long friend.

My dog is a pound hound (cat, too!). The most common reasons people turn pets into the pound are allergy, moving or no time for the pet. Not usually because the animal is bad.

  17. Jennifer C Says:

A good middle ground for you might be to look into a dog rescue. Shelters are great places to find a dog, but a good rescue or no-kill shelter may know more of the dog’s history. In fact, your local shelter or an area vet can recommend a good rescue to you. Some “recues” are less than reputable– it’s worth doing some research on a group before you commit.

Our local SPCA gets plenty of fine dogs that have been given up because of a death or illness in the previous owner’s family, for example. Having more of a history might put your mother’s mind at ease. Do you think that part of her resistance may be that she is set on a specific breed (and hence wants to use a breeder)? If that is the case, there are PLENTY of breed specific rescues that could suit your needs.

You may find the Humane Society’s webpage helpful as well; they give a list of the top reasons that dogs are abandoned at shelters. Reason number 1, by the way? Owners are moving and can’t and/or don’t want to be bothered to taking the dog along.

Annafur, you are a lovely girl with a big heart, and there are a lot of us on here that really like you, and your attitude.

Congratulations on challenging your parents attitude on this one. I would never encourage a young person to be rebellious or rude to their parents, but gentle persuasion on such an important issue is to be commended

Animals are my favorite people, which just goes to show that I’m socially discerning. I’ve a had a lot of dogs and some cats over the years. Nearly all of which were rescue animals.

The only dog I ever had a problem with was a show quality dobermann that I purchased from a top breeder, I’ve never had a problem with a shelter animal, they’ve given me nothing but joy.

I used to work as a volunteer at the shelter, so did my daughter. I wanted to bring home every one of those poor little souls, I always had a fur-child either on my knee or under the desk “helping” in the shelter office. But I had to settle for doing my own small part to help them.

If your parents will not let you have a shelter dog, why not see if you can volunteer as a helper at a local shelter? Or why not volunteer to photograph their animals for them ,this would increase their chances of getting a home, and we all know what a great job you could do with that !

Now to your question. . do I have a dog from the shelter?
    I guess you mean currently.

I have a big black and tan dog that came from the shelter. Her name is Gypsy. She had been gravely ill with an abcess that covered half of one side of her body, they didn’t think she’d pull through, but she did. Gypsy was a favorite at the shelter, partly because of her gentle nature, and also because she used to like sitting on chairs ! They would let her loose and she woud head straight for the visitors chairs, and up she’d hop, and sit there like anyone else! it was so funny.

My Mother lived alone at that stage, she’d been burgled and then someone had tried to snatch her handbag on her own front stairs. She stopped going out, kept the house locked like a fortress and to be honest she went really strange, and it’s no wonder. Anyway, I hatched a plot to get her and Gypsy together. I bought Gypsy, phoned Mum and said i was bringing her over. Mum said “But I don’t want a dog”.
I took the dog over anyway! When she opened the front door Mum was a bit surprised and worried about how big she was. I told her that I’d arranged to get her on a 7 day trial, and if she wanted I could take her back at any time during those 7 days. I also took dog food, leads etc too for her.

The next day I visited and offered to take the dog back, Mum said no, she would see how it goes. This went on every day for the week, and on day 7 I said I could take her back, and Mum said “No thank you, we’ll be alright”. HA ! My plan worked !

After that Mum was less afraid and less weird, she opened the house and she smiled and laughed again. Gypsy and her became best friends and loved each other totally for years.
She even took on another dog called Chookie.

A few year ago, my Mother died. We didn’t find her for four days. When finally we found her, the two dogs were sitting at the foot of her bed, where she lay, guarding her body. The police tried to get in there but those gentle animals would not let the police get anywhere near my Mum. In the end they had to get me to go in and take the dogs out. They had been locked in a hot house for 4 days guarding her.

Now, Gypsy, Chookie and another little dog called Timmy live with me. Gypsy is afraid to let me out of her sight. If I walk into another room, she has to come too. She is damaged from her terrible experience losing Mum, and so am I. We understand each other like no-one else can. She’s very old now and I know I will lose her eventually. But Annafur, I cannot tell you how much I owe this dear shelter dog that had been rescued from death row.
    Here she is:

Good luck with it, and every dog deserves a good home, shelter dog and stray alike, so I hope you enjoy whichever kind of dog you get.

My dog is from a shelter, and he is the nicest, sweetest dog anyone could hope for. He loves everyone! They found him wandering the streets in the dead of winter, as a puppy. He was sick, but still so full of life. I’ve never had any major behavioral problems from him. (Mostly pulling on his leash, because he’d rather run than walk. ) I think you get more problems from a puppy from a puppy mill breeder.

Here’s my dog. His name is Champ. Don’t let those teeth fool you. That’s a genuine smile!

the best dogs on the planet are adopted from shelters. back in my hippy days some friends of mine and i adopted a dog from a shelter and she was a wonderful loving sweet natured dog. and i’ve fostered and adopted dogs since and they’ve all been wonderful companions.
it isn’t about the dog when they wind up in a shelter, it is about the people that had the dog. . . and that is the real tragedy in all that.
