I have house cats and I am still a dog, I need flea medicine f? r the cat?

We have a house cat, who is now not on flea medications. We get a dog that will be on flea medication. We asked our vet if we should even our cat flea medication and she said it was up to us. Do you have experience with this? If we put them on flea medication or is it? Urface? Regularly?
