How to get better at horse riding?

This is really important to me. I’ve had a few riding lessons, but I was doing both English and Western. Now, I’ve told her I want to learn English because I want to jump someday. Any tips on how a beginner can get better at English riding? Maybe just exercises to make me stronger, or balance exercises, or things to help my mind I’ll add more detail if you need it. I can not practice things on a horse because I do not have one. Thanks!

Really, the best way to be a better rider is to ride. In the meantime, you can watch other riders in lessons and see what they are doing right and wrong. Or watch videos – George Morris’ “The Science of Riding” was done many years ago, but it’s still has good tips today. In the meantime, work on your own fitness. Run or walk to help with aerobics. Thurs weight training to help with arms and legs. Do yoga to help with balance and flexibility. All these will help you ride better.

Most Mussels that includes horse riding you do not often use them in everyday lifestyle, riding includes leg strengh and hand-eye co-ordanation, maybe practice leg strengh by a cross trainer at the gym and poor by rowing? I do not do these things yet I managed to learn English from weekly lessons in no time, now I love strong ponies for some reason even though I have no Mussels! Sit up in the saddle? hold the reins loosly perhaps? only put your toes in the stirrups? Hope the excersising helps?

There are a series of equestrian books just for excersises. Here are a list Depending on what type of riding you do! 101 jumping equine dressage schooling exercises101 exercises101 exercisesI would recommend you start with the equine schooling exercises book. It helped me a lot and when I started to jump I got the 101 jumping ecercises book and that helped even more. I do not ride in dressage so I dont have that book.

take lessons and keep riding. The more you ride the more confident you’ll get Therefore the better you will get:) it’s always good to get a knowledgable horse person / rider to watch you every once in a while too tho so you do not develop bad habits good! luck

If you asked Michael Jordan how he got to be so good at basketball, he would say PRACTICE. That is what it takes to get good at anything you want to do in life: PRACTICE. I realize you do not have a horse, but there’s not much that can make you a better rider unless you ride horse. Yes, you can increase your horsemanship knowledge by reading books and articles and watching training DVD’s. But reading something from a book is different than practicing it. Can a heart surgeon to learn how to do open-heart surgery just by reading it from a book? Of course not! They practice countless hours on models, and cadaver hearts, and then under strict observation for years by an experienced surgeon before they can do an open-heart surgery themselves. Same with riding. You could read about how to properly ride a horse, show jump, post at the trot, etc for years, but if you climbed onto a horse one day, it’d be like starting from square one. Yes, you can then work on your physical condition to get yourself in the best shape you can, short of acutally riding horse (which uses totally different muscles than anything you can imitate in a gym). But at least if your overall physical condition and stamina is good, it will help in the transition to riding. So you can work on knowledge, mind, and body when you are not around a horse but really the BEST thing that is going to make you a better rider is to PRACTICE horse riding as much as you possibly can.

get a basketball and squeeze it between your legs for like an hour or however long u can do by watching the t. v or anything u can even do it sitting down but this will really Strengthen legs for english riding is on how u look (in other words equitation) so u need to have good heal soo put the ball of ur foot) on a steo or stairs and put all your weight into ur heals it will help for when you ride and then when your riding go up into 2 point with out ur irons so it will Strengthen your muscles but the most important thing is to practice riding with the horse and get comfertable it will help good luckkk !!!!(:

Lots of lunge work will help your balance a lot better as a riding instructor she needs to give you lung work and then help u by dropping your reins and feeling the horse and just walk when your confortable then drop your stirrups. Then get of the lungs and do the same thing. Its basics of good balance I know it was for me:)
