How to setup a leopard gecko enclosure?
Hi , I just got a ten gallon tank with a screen top. I have a blue light 75 watts and a thermometer for heat and humidity. I have a humid hide and a heat-pad. I haven’t finished yet but i need to know if the things i got are correct and what else you would recommend. Remember I haven’t finished it. I planning to get a juvenile leopard gecko
Everything is good so far. Although, I’ve heard mixed reactions on some heat pads. Apparently, if used incorrectly or if faulty they can burn the gecko’s soft tissue. I’d make sure to check your heat pad regularly if you want to provide one.
You also need a water dish, some calcium powder (either in a dish or dusted on the crickets or whatever you plan on feeding you gecko), and a couple different shelters and caves. Make sure not to crowd the tank with too many hideaways, though. Good luck!
Sounds good so far. Substrate I recommend stay away from anything loose because of impaction and other health risk. Paper towels and reptile carpet are the best/safest.
Otherwise, My leopard gecko care sheet will explain how to set up a habitat, and the care they require. I will post the link directly below this. .
i have cocunut fiber bedding, a heat lamp, a water bowl and 2 hideouts
I have my leopard geckos in a 30 gallon long enclosoure, 10 gallons may be enough for some people but, what would you rather live in, one room or a whole home for the rest of your life. I would invest in a bigger cage when he/she gets bigger/older. Sand is not a good idea, they can injest it while eating. I have a 5 gallon tank that i feed my leopard geckos in, then you don’t have to go throught the whole process of removing the crickets after 15 minutes of feeding. If you are going to put them in a sepreate cage for feeding sand is fine, if you are not use coconut husk, it is cheap, it comes in bricks and you just add water and it expands, i would leave it in over night but 2 – 3 hours works just fine, make sure it is dry when you put it into the cage. When laying out the sand/bark make it hilly my leopard geckos enjoy it. I would use a larger water dish, they like to soak!!! With hides go with two, one for just sleeping in and the other one for when sheding, I put a wad of moist peat moss in the corner and change it out for weter moss every once an a while during sheding time. It raises the humidity alot and helps your leopard gecko not experence shedding problems. Food bowls are a must, you need one food bowl for every gecko or type of food. Crickets need to be rounded up (or fed sepreatly) but mealworms and waxworms need to be fed in a bowl, if they are fed in a bowl they can be left in 24/7, Be sure to remove wanderors or put them back in the bowl. I would get a regular colored floressent or incandessent 15 watt bulb just for light, it is alot easyer to check the enclosure for problems, it also sets a natural light calander (for the gecko) if you turn the regular light off and on with the sun. Use a under tank heat pad, stick it to the side of the cage and keep it on 24/7 you can turn it off if it is too hot or during the summer time. That should mainly cover all of it, Leopard geckos are an investment, alot of money to set up there inclosure, and alot of money to feed. Consider this before buying one or setting up the enclosure any further.
